John Blasquez John Blasquez, fiddlekids program director, is a superlative, seasoned performer in bluegrass, old-time, and Celtic genres, and his fiddling expertise is matched by his remarkable gift for teaching. Patient, encouraging, and creative, John is especially skilled in connecting with kids. Having served on staff for most of its years, John has contributed immensely to fiddlekids. We welcome his ingenuity, motivational talents, and great humor.

Julian Smedley plays truly brilliant swing-jazz fiddle. Julian's stratospheric expertise is balanced by his down to earth teaching style, his effortless patience, an his natural ability with pacing his delivery. The kids love his inventiveness, spontaneity and wit, and his truly swingin' impact on camp. Julian's early European touring on the violin led him to the United States with artists such as Ralph Towner and Dan Hicks. He performs with Mike Wollenberg, Duo Gadjo, and his wife Alison Odell. Mike and Julian have just completed their eagerly awaited CD, A Common Language.
Harry Liedstrand is an inspired and energetic fiddler of traditional music from America and the Celtic countries.  He studied violin at the Conservatory of Music at UOP and began fiddling with Kenny Hall and the Sweets Mill String Band in the 60’s. Harry’s 25 year career as an elementary school teacher provides him a love and understanding of the art of teaching children. Firmly grounded in the American tradition, Harry has been on the teaching staff at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes and his performances are positive and uplifting, whether in the classroom or on the stage.
Karen Cella Heil Karen Celia Heil, a skillful, fun & enthusiastic teacher, is an expert fiddler and guitarist with a special love of old-time southern American fiddle music. Karen has been part of the teaching staff at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Lark in the Morning Camp, and the Berkeley String Band Class. She performs with the Knuckle Knockers and AxeL EepH, and is musical director of the Tin Can Banjo Project. A natural livewire, she brings lots of spark and current to fiddlekids, and to fiddling at large!
Kalia KlibanKalia Kliban has been part of the Bay Area traditional dance community since the mid-80s, performing and teaching morris, Appalachian clogging, English country dance, contra dance, longsword and many other styles. She also makes excellent pipe-cleaner hats, has been known to juggle a wide variety of supermarket produce, has long-term involvement with BACDS Family Week camp. (BACDS is the Bay Area Contra Dance Society.)
Anna Rainer Anna Rainer loves encouraging students to try something new. Kids love Anna because she brings fun, unique, engaging and amazing projects to the classroom. She's an art instructor who thinks of herself as a “possibility-maker.” Her motto is “There is an artist within each child.” Currently she teaches art at Oxford Elementary School in Berkeley and at CCA (California College of the Arts). She's been making and teaching art for over 20 years.
