Bulgarian Wintersongs
with Tzvetanka Varimezova and Kitka - $35
2:15-4:15 pm
Register online
The extended vocal techniques, extraordinary harmonies, and odd-metered rhythms of Bulgarian music have entranced music lovers around the the globe. The brilliant tonal clarity and vocal agility of Bulgarian singers is universally appreciated and many musicians from other traditions have expressed a deep interest in decoding "the mystery of the Bulgarian voice." Tzvetanka Varimezova and Kitka have taught traditional Bulgarian vocal techniques, folk songs, and choral repertoire around the world for more than two decades. Kitka's primary mentor in Bulgarian folk singing, Tzvetanka has sung in and directed many of Bulgaria's greatest women's choirs. Now a professor at UCLA's Department of Ethnomusicology, she is a master of helping non-Bulgarian singers discover their open voice.
This very special intensive workshop will focus on Koleda songs traditionally sung in Bulgaria around the Winter Solstice, Christmas, and the New Year. Folks interested in more work with Tzvetanka are invited to register for a second workshop with her on Tuesday, November 24 from 7:30 - 9:30 PM at Silk Road House in Berkeley.
