Welcome to the Doghouse! This series is designed for upright-bass beginners and for novices and occasional players who want to start from the beginning to learn solid technique for left and right hands. You’ll learn about good intonation, timing, and basic theory as you play along with recordings of classic songs using a root-fifth approach with basic runs.

NOTE: Don’t have an upright bass? No problem! Two basses will be available to borrow during class periods only, and additional basses will be available for short-term take-home rental. Both arrangements are on a first-come-first-served basis, so please contact the instructor ASAP if you are interested: chuck.ervin@att.net

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Bassist Chuck Ervin performs swing music with the Sylvia Herold Ensemble, folk music with Euphonia, classic country with the Mike Stadler & Mary Gibbons Band, jazz and pop with guitarist Chris Grampp, and is an in-demand bassist in the Bay Area’s vibrant jazz and acoustic-music scenes.

He has worked with many other Bay Area musicians, including Bobby Black, Joe Craven, Ed Johnson, Jinx Jones, Keith Little, Tony Marcus, Jim Nunally, Jeff Sanford, Julian Smedley, and Radim Zenkl. He has also performed as an actor and musician in numerous stage productions, including “Woody Guthrie’s American Song” at the Freight & Salvage.

He studied jazz bass with Glenn Richman, bassist for famed vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, and teaches bass at the Freight & Salvage, at music camps, and at his Oakland studio. Visit www.basschuck.com for more information.
