Tab Rehab w/ Kaila Flexer

Sunday, Jnuary 31, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

$30.00

Violinist Kaila Flexer offers Tab Rehab, a workshop for mandolin players and others who rely on tablature, but would like to start reading standard musical notation.

Would you like to read music but have never quite cracked the code? Perhaps you feel really comfortable playing by ear, but would like to be able to write down a tune for your friend who can only read music. Perhaps you'd like to be able to sit down and read through a bunch of fiddle tunes. Or let's say you've composed a song and would like to make a chart so that working up your tune at the next rehearsal is more efficient. While there's nothing wrong with tablature, the ability to read music opens whole worlds to you!

Learning to read music can feel daunting—reading the rhythms, pitches, negotiating the time and key signatures, and if you're a string player, bowings—but if approached by wading into the shallow end and systematically approaching the deeper waters, reading can become quite intuitive and natural. We'll cover the rhythmic rudiments of reading music, do some musical dictation and discuss making charts. I'll give you some of my transcribing tricks, touch on a bit of music theory and answer your questions. Please bring your instruments and a pencil with a good eraser. I'll provide staff paper and handouts.

This workshop is open to all musicians (melodic instrumentalists, percussionists, and vocalists) who consider themselves to be advanced beginner to advanced players. No prior music-reading experience necessary. Please pre-register for this class so Kaila can properly prepare for the instrumentation!

Kaila Flexer is a violinist, composer, and music educator. Currently one half of the duo Teslim (Sephardic, Greek, Turkish and original music), Kaila is also artistic director of Pomegranates & Figs: A Feast of Jewish Music, and founder of the beloved Bay Area Jewish music event Klezmer Mania! She toured nationally and abroad with her own ensembles (Third Ear, Next Village, Kaila Flexer's Fieldharmonik) and with groups including The Flexer-Marshall Duo and Club Foot Orchestra. In addition to performing, Kaila teaches violin and composition in her Oakland studio as well as leading a variety of workshops.
