Steve Seskin will have you wiping away a tear one minute and laughing out loud the next. His songs all have messages that touch the hearts of everyone: from the feelings of a little boy missing his father, to growing up and being true to yourself, to one of his most well-known themes of being considerate to and respectful of one another as expressed in “Don’t Laugh at Me”. Steve has written seven number one songs, including the Grammy-nominated “Grown Men Don’t Cry”, recorded by Tim McGraw, “No Doubt About It” and “For a Change”, recorded by Neal McCoy, “No Man’s Land” and “If You’ve Got Love”, recorded by John Michael Montgomery, “Daddy’s Money”, recorded by Ricochet, and the above mentioned “Don’t Laugh at Me”, which was recorded by both Mark Willis and Peter, Paul, and Mary. This song became the impetus for the Operation Respect/Don’t Laugh at Me Project, a curriculum designed to teach tolerance in schools. The program has been implemented in more than 20,000 schools across the country.

John Lester is an accomplished singer-songwriter-bassist, back home in the Bay Area after a decade of living and touring in Europe. His return to the Freight & Salvage marks the release of his sixth album “Fathers and Sons” which guests Grammy-nominated songwriter Gretchen Peters, pianist Barry Walsh, and Grammy-award winning fretless bassist Michael Manring. The new album is a collection of John’s most personal and powerful work yet, inspired by the often unspoken family relationships between men. Each song messages the love, pain, struggle, and questions that arise and confound the dynamics of these ties and bonds. From the full acceptance and embrace of a young child’s gender fluidity in “The Beautiful Princess of Never Come True”; to the merciful attempts at reconciliation with an ailing father in “The High Road”; to the feeling of big love greeting you on the playground in “Love Attack”, John’s life experience as father, husband, son, teacher, and storyteller is felt through these songs. Along with his 100-year-old upright bass, Sarah, John plays a variety of instruments including baritone guitar, nylon string guitar, and a little 1930’s Martin ukulele that belonged to a grandfather he never met.

For this special Father’s Day show, Steve and John will each play solo as well as collaborating with each other.
