Singer-songwriter Radney Foster grew up in Del Rio, Texas, not far from the Mexican border, moved to Nashville, where he’s lived for years, and recently recorded his tenth and latest album, Everything I Should Have Said, in Louisiana. His catchy country sound encompasses all those places, combining Nashville virtuosity with border-town spice and bayou tang. His songs, says Icon Magazine, “are essentially country, but are charged with crackling Louisiana flavors and wiry, rootsy-rock a la The Band. His voice has a plainspoken quality akin to that of the late Levon Helm.” The Charleston City Paper says that his “music doesn’t jump up and down, wear fancy clothes, or beat around the bush.” That’s a compliment. “I’m always trying to find a little piece of the truth,” Radney says, and he tells that truth with catchy tunes and a voice rich in expression.

His first success came in the late 1980s with the seminal country/cowpunk duo Foster & Lloyd, whose first single, “Crazy Over You,” went straight to #1. His subsequent solo albums served up enduring hits “Just Call Me Lonesome” and “Nobody Wins.” Since then, he’s served as a friend and mentor to many young artists on the Texas scene, writing and producing for Kacey Musgraves, Josh Abbott, Pat Green, Wade Bowen, and others. Stars like Keith Urban, Sara Evans, and the Dixie Chicks have recorded his songs. “I’ve gotten to an age where I feel like I don’t have anything to prove,” he says. “And that’s very freeing when it comes to playing, singing, and recording.” Radney Foster feeling free is a formula for a great show at the Freight!
