Holly NearHolly Near brings to the stage a unique combination of highly trained vocal power, delightful humor and poetic reflection. Last time she was at The Freight, she had a fabulous band and a film crew. This time, it is pure Holly. Her pianist of 30 years, John Bucchino, provides a subtle theatrical backdrop for Holly's musical reflections and vocal support is provided by emma's revolution. For over 40 years, Near has fused cabaret, folk and spoken word in to a sound track for progressive thinking. The repertoire weaves through Holly's own deeply moving compositions to songs by such luminaries as Dr. Bernice Reagon and Ferron to great classics like Rogers and Hart's "Where or When". Recently, Near led an amazing evening of song at The Freight and Salvage to honor legendary Pete Seeger, proving once again, she is a consummate entertainer and cultural leader. Her powerful voice has creatively articulated the complexities of social change activism since the early seventies. With critical thinking as a major element in her songwriting, she has been a unifying force connecting the issues that so challenge the lives of activists, educators and community. Near says, "Now that Pete Seeger, Odetta, Mary Travers, Maya Angelou, Ruby Dee and so many other elders have left us, artists of my generation are no longer elders in training. We are the elders."

Joining Holly tonight are pianist John Bucchino, who has worked with for Holly for 30 years, bassist Jan Martinelli, and Sandy Opataw and Pat Humphries—aka emma's revolution—on support vocals, guitar, ukulele, and banjo.
