The workshop takes a hands-on approach to old time fiddle as taught by Bruce Molsky, one of the most influential traditional fiddlers of his generation. Tunes are taught a phrase at a time, first melody, then bowing, and then piecing things together. We'll dig into old-time music's unique phrasing, rhythm and syncopation, intonation, etc. The tune is the vehicle, so mostly we'll be playing! A recorder (minidisc, hard disk, tape, 78-rpm acetate cutter or wire recorder) is highly recommended. Since developing ear training skills is one of the workshop goals, written music will not be provided. *No video cameras, please.*
*Suggested experience level: If you're comfortable with the instrument and have at least a small repertoire of tunes then you'll be fine. The skeleton of the tune is taught first, and then built upon with additional bowing, variations, etc.
Bruce Molsky stands today as the premier old-time fiddler in the
world, the defining virtuoso of Appalachia's timeless folk music
traditions. That must feel odd for a former engineer from the Bronx, who
didn't begin a music career until he was forty. But folded into those
strange facts is the secret to his unique genius.
In addition to a
prolific solo career, performing on fiddle, guitar, banjo and vocals,
Bruce frequently joins genre-busting supergroups, like the
Grammy-nominated Fiddlers Four, and Mozaik, with Hungarian Nikola Parov,
and Celtic giant Donal Lunny. He was on Nickel Creek's farewell tour,
and performs in a trio with Scottish fiddler Aly Bain and Sweden's great
Ale Moller.
"America's reigning old time fiddler." Matt Glaser, fiddler-educator
"The Rembrandt of Appalachian fiddle." Darol Anger, fiddler
