Two songwriters of enormous heart and spirit present solo sets on the Freight stage—a chance to savor songs old and new, novel approaches, and the love of spontaneity shared by these two artists in an intimate setting.

Glen Phillips writes songs that veer from lush and refined pop to pared-down ballads, all of it delivered on the silver platter of his sweet, soulful voice. Probably best known as front man for the alternative rock group Toad the Wet Sprocket, in his solo efforts Glen continues to make music that is distinguished by hummable tunes and insightful personal narratives full of literate, rather idiosyncratic lyrics. Glen has gained critical praise and an ever-growing following over the course of several solo CDs, like Mr. Lemons, and he continues to mix it up with various side projects, including Works Progress Administration with Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek.

Grant-Lee Phillips is probably best known as the golden voice and poetic vision at the front of the critically acclaimed alternative roots rock trio Grant Lee Buffalo. Soon after the band released their 1993 debut album, Fuzzy, Grant-Lee found a rapidly growing following for his searching, sweepingly cinematic songs. In addition to his superb songwriting, Grant-Lee was voted best male vocalist of 1995 by Rolling Stone magazine. Continuing to evolve as an artist and performer following the band's breakup in 1999, the singer has released a series of solo CDs, most recently Little Moon.
