Join us for a rousing evening of fiddle magic steeped in talent and tradition: the 28th annual Freight Fiddle Summit. You’ll be in excellent company with host Alasdair Fraser & cellist Natalie Haas, Jeremy Kittel Trio, Genticorum, dancer extraordinaire Nic Gareiss, and special guests. Three For Joy will perform pre-show on the gallery stage in the Freight lobby.

Scots Magazine calls Alasdair “one of the finest fiddle players Scotland has ever produced; his name is synonymous with the vibrant cultural renaissance transforming the Scottish musical scene.” Natalie, a Juilliard graduate, is one of the most sought-after cellists playing traditional music today. She’s toured with Mark O’Connor and played as a guest artist on over 50 albums.

Jeremy is an American fiddler, violinist, and composer whose original music draws from traditional roots, jazz, Celtic, Classical, and electronic. His trio includes mandolinist Joshua Pinkham and guitarist Quinn Bachand.

Quebec trio Genticorum—featuring Pascal Gemme, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand and Yann Falquet—is firmly rooted in the soil of their native land. They weave precise and intricate fiddle and flute work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and guitar and bass accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Michigan native Nic Gareiss is, according to the Irish Times, “the human epitome of the unbearable lightness of being,” and “more fleet of foot than an Olympian sprinter and more buoyant than a helium-filled balloon”—his “freeform flight is inevitable.” He dances with 4TET, This Is How We Fly, and in a duo with Scottish harpist Maeve Gilchrist. 

Three for Joy is a Celtic music band made up of siblings Dominic (age 13), Joseph (11), and Angela Rose (9) Padula. With their fiddles, cello and mandolin, the group performs Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton tunes, while weaving Irish dancing into the performance.

The repertoire of Three for Joy ranges from traditional to contemporary compositions in the Celtic style, presented with compelling arrangements and unique textures of melody, harmony and rhythm. Though young, these accomplished musicians enthrall audiences of all ages.

In August 2016, Three for Joy members will attend Alasdair Fraser’s Valley of the Moon (VOM) Scottish Fiddling School for the fourth time. The trio is hugely indebted to Alasdair, Natalie Haas, and the other amazing VOM teachers.
