We start from scratch. How do you hold the fiddle? How about the bow? How do we turn noise into music? Along the way we'll learn simple tunes, a bit about reading music, a lot about playing by ear, and learn some tunes that people still play at jam sessions. All tunes will be taught by ear as well as by musical notation. Printed pages will be handed out, as well as available through the class's website. All you need is a fiddle and a bow, though I highly recommend a shoulder rest for the fiddle and an electronic tuning device, both available at stores where violins are sold. I also strongly suggest bringing a recording device: a voice recorder, a smart phone, or even an archaic cassette recorder. The class strives to find the joy of making the fiddle sing for you even as we learn.
