The festival kicks off at 3:00 p.m. in the Freight lobby with Cella Bellydance, under the direction of Elizabeth Strong, performing Romani and folk-inspired belly dances. Incognito Express, featuring Dan Cantrell, Gregory Masaki-Jenkins, Darren Johnston, and Andrew Cohen, provides live musical accompaniment, showcasing Romani, Bulgarian, Serbian, Greek, and Macedonian traditions, as well as playing Balkan-inspired originals. The festival moves outside at 4:00 p.m., weather permitting, when the 19 madcap musicians of Vaud & the Villains, a 1930s New Orleans Orchestra, lead a procession down Addison Street and into the Freight!

Leftover Cuties

The Leftover Cuties are a quirky blend of classic and modern. “Their signature style is playful and light-hearted,” says Paste Magazine, “but the feel-good melodies often belie lyrics tinged in sadness.” It’s that combination of light-hearted and something darker that gives the music its distinctive appeal. Their song “Game Called Life” is the theme for Showtime’s The Big C, and their song “Smile Big,” has garnered more than three million YouTube views. The band features Shirli McAllen on ukulele and lead vocals, Austin Nicholsen on bass and vocals, Mike Bolger on brass, keys, accordion, and vocals, and Stuart Johnson on percussion and vocals.

Tin Hat

The New Yorker described Tin Hat's music as “a soundtrack for the kind of puzzling dream which leaves you sitting awake in the middle of the night.” PopMatters says their style is, "elegant, technically uncompromising, and at times blistering in its fret-burning.” The band features Carla Kihlstedt on violin and vocals, Mark Orton on guitar and dobro, Ben Goldberg on clarinets, and Rob Reich on accordion and piano. On their latest album, the rain is a handsome animal, inspired by the poetry of e.e. cummings. Carla's husky, haunting voice provides just the right vocal note to suit the poet’s evocative language. Jazz critic Andrew Gilbert calls it “A beautiful album that reveals more with each spin.”

John Jorgenson Quintet

John Jorgenson is the U.S. Ambassador of Gypsy Jazz, and his quintet is the only American act to headline the prestigious Django Reinhardt Memorial Festival in France. John is a phenomenal guitarist who has collaborated with Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt, and Bob Dylan, and contributed to many platinum-selling and Grammy-winning albums. Co-founder of the Desert Rose Band and the Hellecasters, the Academy of Country Music’s three-time Guitarist of the Year, he plays guitar, clarinet, and bouzouki in the quintet, which also features John Jarvis on piano, Simon Planting on bass, Jason Anick on violin, and Rick Reed on percussion.
