Duck’s Breath Mystery Theatre, the sketch comedy troupe Newsweek once called the American Monty Python, is reuniting for a grand finale at the Freight. From their humble roots performing for free beer at the University of Iowa in 1975, they moved to San Francisco in 1976, started doing their act at Fisherman’s Wharf, and were soon headlining at the Boarding House and the Great American Music Hall. Their comedy has influenced everyone from cartoonist and creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, to Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller and Joel Hodgson, creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Their skit, Ask Dr. Science, spawned NPR’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, and members of the troupe have appeared often on NPR’s All Things Considered and ABC’s World News Now. And who can forget their 1991 feature film, Zadar! Cow From Hell, which earned an Iowa Film Award nomination for Best Film of the Century? The San Francisco Chronicle has praised “the wacky (or is it quacky) world of Duck’s Breath Mystery Theatre,” and says that “their supreme objectives – chaos and yuks and wince-inducing irreverence – have remained untouched by time.”

The troupe features Bill Allard, who currently teaches drama and media production at the University of San Francisco; Dan “Dr. Science” Coffey; Merle Kessler, who, as Ian Shoales, is a featured guest on KALW’s Philosophy Talk; actor, director, and playwright Leon Martell; and Jim “Randee of the Redwoods” Turner, who appeared in the HBO series Arli$$. They’re gearing up now for a farewell performance of epic proportions. If you like sketch comedy, these guys are a blast!
