To help kick off the 2013 San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, the Freight presents bluegrass luminary David Thom and his band, along with two-time Grammy nominee Don Rigsby.  David and Don will start the show in the classic brother duet style, followed by a bluegrass set featuring Don on lead and harmony singing, as well as mandolin and fiddle.  David met Don while working with Bill Evans’ Flatt and Scruggs Tribute Band last winter, and Don played with David and his band in Michigan and Kentucky this past summer.

Don grew up in Elliot County, Kentucky, listening to early Ralph Stanley records and to the high lonesome sound of his cousin Ricky Skaggs.  He emerged onto the national scene as a member of the Bluegrass Cardinals, played with JD Crowe and the New South, and was a member of the award-winning Lonesome River Band as well as the supergroup Longview.  The David Thom Band features David on guitar, Andy Shaw on banjo, Jeff King on bass, Paul Shelasky on fiddle, and Brian Judd on mandolin.  Everybody sings—with great gusto and flair.  Please join us for a joyful celebration of classic and contemporary bluegrass!
