Crosspulse presents the Second International Body Music Festival Kenny Muhammad, Las Flamencas, De Rompe y Raja w/ Braulio Barrera, LeeLa Petronio, Max Pollak, and Keith Terry & Evie Ladin

As part of the second annual Bay Area-wide celebration known as [Crosspulse] International Body Music Festival, the Freight is proud to present a sizzlin smorgasbord of contemporary and traditional percussive body music and dance. Purveyors of this rarely recognized but widespread art form converge on our stage from around the globe for an irresistible hand-clapping, foot-stomping, chest-whomping extravaganza!

New Yorker KENNY MUHAMMAD, AKA the Human Orchestra, puts an entirely new twist on the vocal percussion style known as beatbox. Three-time consecutive winner on Showtime at the Apollo, Kenny offers a melodious ride of sight, sound and imagination. Alameda's vocal percussionists DE ROMPE Y RAJA join forces with Peruvian master dancer BRAULIO BARRERA for an amazing set of zapateo criollo, a unique style of syncopated hard shoe footwork that mixes African rhythms with Creole, Spanish Roma, European and indigenous Peruvian rhythms.

A tap dancer and body percussionist from Paris, France, LEELA PETRONIO is a choreographer, teacher, and producer who blends rhythm tap, hip hop, and body percussion. A member of the European cast of STOMP since 2001 and artistic director of the Hip Tap Project, tonight Leela appears solo.

MAX POLLAK, from New York, has cooked up the label of RumbaTap for his style that merges the flow of Afro-Cuban rumba music and dance with American foot-driven percussion.

The Bay Area's own drummer and body percussionist (and festival director), KEITH TERRY, teams up with EVIE LADIN for a jaw-dropping, all-body duo set. Keith has developed a singular, contemporary style of body music which he uses in collaboration with artists from Bobby McFerrin to the Turtle Island String Quartet; Evie has clogged, tapped, and step danced her way through much of her highly rhythmic life.

Of last year's festival, Keith says: "We were all playing our bodies, but culture would really shine through with every artist. That really hit me—we were all playing the same instrument, but the result that came out was so distinctively French, or Turkish, or Brazilian." Come see for yourself tonight!
