Widely respected as one of the best traditional Creole/Zydeco musicians living today, Jeffery Broussard brings Creole/Zydeco Accordion to the Freight! Jeffery will discuss the differences between Cajun and Creole accordion styles, focusing on three traditional tunes, which he will teach to students. The workshop will be taught in the tradition of Creole/Zydeco music, without the use of sheet music or chord charts. All songs will be taught by ear, with the focus on teaching students to listen to the songs, and learn to play with emphasis on rhythm and feel. This workshop will be taught on a Cajun accordion in the key of C.

The son of traditional Creole accordion icon Delton Broussard, Jeffery grew up in Frilot Cove, Louisiana, a rural community northwest of Opelousas. Jeffery began his musical journey at the age of 8, playing the drums in his father's legendary band, the Lawtell Playboys. Whenever possible, Jeffery would sneak his daddy's accordion down from the closet where it was stored and would teach himself how to play. During his teen years, Jeffery also played drums in his oldest brother Clinton's band, Clinton Broussard & The Zydeco Machines. It was in this band that Jeffery played the accordion in public for the first time. Zydeco music is played on a variety of accordions, but most commonly the triple-row and single-row diatonic button accordions. The fiddle is essential to authentic roots Zydeco, and Jeffery is one of a handful of Creole fiddlers currently touring. He plays his own style, developed using only two fingers on the strings, sometimes a third, but never a fourth. He plays by sliding into and out of the notes.

Jeffery was awarded the highest honor given by the Louisiana Division of the Arts, the Artist Fellowship. He has toured throughout North America, Europe, and received a Fulbright-Hays Grant through the U.S. Department of State that sent him on tour of West Africa.
