Francisco HerreraPlease join us for a community celebration of Cinco de Mayo – “Celebrando Nuestra Dignidad” – featuring Francisco Herrera, Madelina y los Carpinteros, and several of their talented musical friends. With “flor y canto,” flower and song, the show will honor the spirit of Mexico in solidarity with the missing students of Ayotzinapa.

Francisco Herrera is a Bay Area theologian, cultural worker, and singer-songwriter who promotes human rights and social justice through the power of music. His albums include Posada Sin Fronteras, Fuerza de la Raiz, Canta y Juega, and, most recently, Honor Migrante. Francisco grew up in Calexico, traveled extensively in Latin America, attended seminary, and has worked tirelessly in community organizations, all the while playing guitar and singing songs that cross musical boundaries, from norteños and corridos to electro-cumbia and Latin rock.

Bay Area band Madelina y Los Carpinteros – featuring Madelina Zayas, Fernando Feña Torres, and Denis Schmidt, with special guest Brandon Vance – plays music rooted in the Nueva Canción movement, which is to say songs that have sprung from the folk traditions of Latin America, from Mexico to Puerto Rico to Chile, embracing both the personal and the political, raising consciousness about the struggles of people throughout the world.
