Buffy Sainte-Marie is an enduring legend. Folk singer, songwriter, champion of human rights—not to mention Oscar winner, Golden Globe winner, and member of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame—she has been performing with passion and commitment for more than 50 years. Billboard Magazine named her Best New Artist in 1964 for her debut album It’s My Way! She won her third Juno Award in 2009 for her album Running for the Drum. She’s written classic songs—“Universal Soldier,” “Until It’s Time for You to Go,” “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”—and she co-wrote “Up Where We Belong” for the movie An Officer and a Gentleman. What stands out about her, aside from the unique vibrato, is the heart and soul she brings to her music and her life.
 
Born on the Piapot Cree First Nations Reserve in the Qu’Appelle Valley of Saskatchewan, raised in Wakefield, Massachusetts, she finished college in 1962 and started singing folk songs in Greenwich Village with other young Canadian artists like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. She’s recorded 25 albums, and Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Janis Joplin, Roberta Flack, Gram Parsons, and Cher have recorded her songs. Her political activism took her to Alcatraz and Wounded Knee, and even to Sesame Street, where she was a regular for five years in the late 1970s. Recently, as controversy swirled around the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights, where she was scheduled to perform, she said in an interview, “I wouldn't be surprised if the museum is a little bit scant. As an aboriginal person that hurts, but as an educator I'm aware that you have to start somewhere.” Then she added: “I'm slow to criticize.
