Old-time clawhammer banjo is a unique sound in American traditional
music. Once you get the basic technique, it's pretty easy to make music,
and play along with all kinds of songs. We will start from scratch with
basic technique and learn some songs and tunes from the standard
repertoire. We will also discuss some basic music theory that is useful
for any instrument, in any genre. For all ages.
Jordan Ruyle is a banjo player, old time
musician and square dance caller living in Oakland, CA. He 'discovered'
the banjo in the early 1990s and has never looked back. His love of
old-time music led him to teaching and he has since worked with hundreds
of students privately, in workshops, and on teaching staff at
festivals. He balances his teaching with his active performance
schedule. Currently playing with local old-time bands the Pork Pies and
the Schoolhouse Stringband, Jordan was also a founding member of the
Mercury Dimes. Jordan is also a southern square dance caller and
regularly organizes and calls dances locally. He is happy to be teaching
banjo at the Freight!
