Irish Sean Nós; Scottish ballads and airs; Appalachian love songs and folk-hymns...Explore some of their nuances of style, timbre & function by singing and listening! Moira's fluid voice and warm, experienced teaching will have you singing the beautiful ornaments and various colors of Anglo-Celtic traditional songs from the 14th through the 20th Century. Also, in the spirit of the many stories, ancient and modern, of connections between the Mediterranean and Celtic world, Moira will include some tidbits of Balkan traditional songs. This is a shortened version of the themes which Moira explores thoroughly each year when she teaches at Zoukfest in New Mexico with the likes of Andy Irvine, Martin Hayes, and Bay Area luminaries Kaila Flexer and Sonja Drakulic.

Moira Smiley, a singer-composer, creates music for dance, theatre and film. Her voice, improvisations and compositions can be heard on feature films, documentaries, BBC, PBS, and on over 40 recordings. She has sung with leading ensembles and artists around the world including Paul Hillier's Theater of Voices, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, KITKA Vocal Ensemble, New World Symphony, Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Her group VOCO performs sweet, hard-driving Americana mixed with crooked eastern European dance and dissonance, rounded out with body-stompin' percussive movement; she also performs with the Celtic group Molly's Revenge at the Freight tonight!
