Ancient FutureThe pioneering world music band Ancient Future reunites to celebrate the re-release of their influential 1990 album, World Without Walls, bringing together the original lineup of Matthew Montfort on scalloped fretboard guitar, Jim Hurley on violin, Doug McKeehan on keyboards, Ian Dogole on percussion, and Kash Killion on bass. “Ancient Future is a rare kind of band that might simultaneously aggravate purists, confound New Age dilettantes, seduce skeptics, and dazzle just about everybody else,” writes Derk Richardson in the Bay Guardian. “Delicious compositions, intricate arrangements, crisp playing, and impeccable production put these ambitious voyagers in a league of their own.” The band’s original music is an exhilarating fusion of exciting rhythms and sounds from around the globe that combines contemporary jazz and rock with the rich harmonies of Europe, the beautiful melodies of Asia, and the irresistible rhythms of Africa, Bali, India, the Middle East, and South America.

Matthew came to the Bay Area in 1977 from Boulder, Colorado to study North Indian classical music at the Ali Akbar College of Music, and formed Ancient Future in 1978. Ever since, the band has expanded its musical vision through collaboration with dozens of musical masters from around the world, from Balinese gamelan director Madé Gerindem to North Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan. According to India Currents, the band “plays with technical brilliance and gypsy-like fire,” and their music "demonstrates the continuing beneficial influence of Indian music upon world culture.” All five members of the band are exceptional performers. Tonight is a chance to hear them celebrate their original vision of a musical world without borders!
