Sue "Suki" Kaye , originally from New York City and now living in the SF Bay area has been playing congas, ngoma, and other percussion for over 40 years, and she recently added kalimba {African thumb piano} to her repertoire. Suki has been deeply influenced by so many amazing teachers from the Congo, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil,Nigeria, Trinidad and more!!Over the years she has performed with many bands, including Azucar con Ache, Rita Lackey Band, Liquid Girlfriend, Montuno Groove, Azucar y Crema, Omeyocan, Bole Bantu, Pura Vida, Zakiya Hooker, and Samba Ngo and the Ngoma Players. She has opened the show and shared the stage with such luminaries as Babatunde Olatunji, King Sunny Ade, and Sheila E. Suki, and she is a very experienced dance accompanist, presently playing with Taller Bombalele, an SF Bay area Puerto Rican Folkloric Bomba group. She has also been an educator for many years - an elementary and preschool teacher, as well as conducting percussion workshops for both kids and adults, presently on the faculty of Born to Drum - a drum camp for women here in the East Bay. Mostly she loves to play music and be creative with other musicians!
