The Plot: Francesco Foscari is the Doge of Venice; his son Jacopo Foscari is accused of murder. Francesco is torn between paternal love and civic duty. Jacopo’s wife Lucrezia pleads with her father-in-law for mercy. Tragically, he fulfills his role of pitiless Doge, becoming the agent of his son’s punishment and his family’s disintegration.
