On January 8, 1990, West Coast Songwriters held it’s first Competition at the Freight.
Some things were different back then. The West Coast Songwriters were called Northern California Songwriters, the Songwriting Competition was called an Open Mic, and the Freight was at 1111 Addison. But some things are still the same: the WCS Berkeley Chapter has held a songwriter event at the Freight on a Monday, monthly for twenty-five years, providing opportunities, tools, and an environment to nurture and promote successful songwriters.
Check
out the future when the West Coast Songwriters present their monthly
Songwriter Competition, where members take the stage and perform their
material live on the Freight stage. Performers sign up from 7:00 to
7:20, and at 7:30 the house lights go down and the show goes on! Guest
judges award a “Best Song” and “Best Performance.” The most
active association of songwriters in the country, WCS is dedicated
to providing the environment, opportunities, and tools to nurture and
promote successful songwriters. The talent on display is worth checking
out, and you might hear a future classic.
