Watkins Family Hour

The Watkins Family Hour is a moveable musical feast hosted by siblings Sean and Sara Watkins, featuring an ever-changing cast of supremely talented friends. Sean and Sara co-founded Nickel Creek before they reached their teens, and the band has gone on to release seven albums of amazing music in the progressive bluegrass vein, earning six Grammy nominations and winning a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Sean and Sara have also released outstanding solo albums and collaborated with an array of stellar musicians, many of whom have joined them at the Largo in Los Angeles for the Watkins Family Hour, a convivial, communal show that they’re now taking on the road. Serendipity meets virtuosity when each unscripted performance unfolds, and fabulous musicians spontaneously play some of their favorite songs together.

Tonight’s show features Sean and Sara on a variety of instruments, Fiona Apple on piano, Don Heffington on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, and whichever special guests happen to hop onstage. Jackson Browne, John C. Reilly, and Booker T. have all joined them at the Largo, and we expect an equally exciting assortment of terrific players here at the Freight. The fun—for the performers and the audience—is to see who shows up and hear the musical magic they make. “I feel lucky,” Sara says, “to experience those Family Hour moments, where it’s always different, and you get to share the same space with musicians who are doing great things – to stand there in awe and try to contribute something special.” If you like surprises, if you enjoy musical matchmaking as it happens in the moment, come see Sean and Sara Watkins turn the Freight into a cozy living room where a band of brilliant friends get together and jam.
