The Waifs, that wonderful folk-pop-roots band from Australia, are coming to the Freight with a terrific new album, Beautiful You, featuring their incisive songwriting, irresistible instrumental grooves, and soulful vocals. Since their debut release in 1996, they’ve sold millions of albums, toured Australia and North America with Bob Dylan, and gone their separate ways for years at a time. Now they’re back together, digging deep into songs of passion and despair, love and longing, homesickness and home.

The band centers around sisters Donna Simpson and Vicki Thorn, who left their tiny hometown of Cosy Corner Beach in Western Australia to make their fortune as a duo, and Josh Cunningham, whom they soon enlisted to round out the group. The trio traveled in a Kombi van for four years, playing shows for miners, bikers, and desert rats, perfecting the exquisite harmonies that have served them so well ever since. Donna plays guitar, Vicki plays guitar and harmonica, Josh plays guitar, banjo, and ukulele, and all three write songs and share lead vocal duties. Ben Franz on bass and Dave Ross MacDonald on drums make up the rhythm section. The band has won multiple Australia Recording Industry Association awards, and has fans around the world. These days, Donna lives in Fremantle after spending years in Minneapolis, Vicki lives in southern Utah, and Josh splits his time between California and New South Wales. "We're family and we love to play music together," Vicki says. "There's a genuine passion and love for what we do and we want to share that with people. That's always been there, this chemistry, but it's gotten deeper. We're not sort of young and overly sensitive and emotional, like we used to be.
