An exquisitely virtuosic pianist, a graceful vocalist, and a composer of evocative songs with smart, fresh lyrics, Vienna Teng returns to the Freight for a memorable musical retrospective. Over the course of the decade between her debut album, Waking Hour, and the release of her recent Inland Territory (Zoe/Rounder), Vienna has created some truly beautiful music, a rich, complex blend that sets her classical background and folk sensibilities within a contemporary pop framework. Tonight, we’ll hear gems from throughout her career, from lush instrumentals to deeply thoughtful personal narratives.

Born in Saratoga, CA, Vienna started piano lessons at age five and wrote her first song the following year. Her first CD, released in 2002, gained her widespread media attention, and led to appearances on NPR’s Weekend Edition, the Late Show with David Letterman, and opening gigs for artists like Joan Baez, Shawn Colvin, and Joan Osborne. These days, Vienna’s touring schedule is somewhat curtailed by her studies in sustainable enterprise at the University of Michigan. We’re lucky to get the chance to see her tonight!

In describing her own songs, Vienna notes that "We pass through each other's lives so briefly that it's easy to think of the people around us as mere objects, cold and removed. Writing songs is my way of breathing warmth into them. Attempting to tell their stories, however fictitious the results, reminds me of our common humanity."
