UpsurgeJoin UpSurge! for an inspiring evening fusing fearless poetry and swinging jazz in an homage to jazz vocalist Eddie Jefferson, actor/playwright/civil rights activist Oscar Brown, Jr., and jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron, three of the masters who have inspired the group’s unique cutting-edge mix of music and spoken word.

Since 1990 UpSurge! has been mixing conscious words with assorted grooves and moods to reach deep into the soul and dissolve boundaries that separate genres and people. With their debut CD, All Hands on Deck, UpSurge! garnered an Indie Award nomination from the Association for Independent Music in 2000, and the group won Readers’ Pick for Best Poet or Spoken-Word Performer in the 2003 East Bay Express “Best of the East Bay.”

Jazz poets Raymond Nat Turner and Zigi Lowenberg bend metaphors and split similes at center stage, joined by Richard Howell on saxophones, Benny Watson on piano, Rob Rhodes on drums, and bassist Ollen Erich Hunt, plus special guest vocalist Ernest East.
