Hiram BellGrab your uke and head to the Freight for a Ukulele Play-A-Long with Hiram Kaailau Bell! Hiram grew up in Oahu and moved to San Francisco in 1979. He currently teaches ukulele at Chabot College and College of San Mateo, as well as offering private classes, and plays at clubs, festivals, and kani kapila – also known as jam sessions. He’s released a studio album, Sound Waves, and a live album, Santa Cruz Uke Club Presents Hiram Bell – all of which is great, but the point of the Play-Along is to make music and have fun!

“Where I grew up,” Hiram said in a story in the San Francisco Chronicle, “a ukulele was sitting in the corner of everyone's house, and everyone would be strumming it.” But when he arrived in the United States, the ukulele was treated as a novelty instrument, something for Tiny Tim to play when he sang “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.” Then in 1993, back in Hiram’s home place, Oahu’s Palolo Valley, local musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, known as Iz, recorded a gorgeous version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and the ukulele has been growing in popularity ever since. “It's gone like wildfire. It's just crazy,” according to Hiram. “It’s creative, it’s positive and it’s just soaring in popularity. We’re the biggest group of musicians in the world – we even outnumber drummers.” Tonight, it’s your chance to get in on the action!
