Tonight's concert showcases four outstanding student groups from the award-winning University of California Jazz Ensembles program. The evening progresses through three stellar combos, coached by the director of the program, Ted Moore, and faculty members Dann Zinn and Frank Martin, and concludes with the award-winning UC Jazz Big Band, under the direction of Steve Campos. UC Jazz Ensembles, one of three student groups within Cal Performances, is dedicated to the performance, study, and promotion of jazz at UC Berkeley. The combos cover a wide range of repertoire and styles, including jazz standards, challenging and contemporary material from composers such as Dave Liebman and Chick Corea, and the students’ own original compositions.
