Swingle SingersThe Swingle Singers have been pushing the boundaries of the human voice for more than half a century. Founded in Paris in 1962, they released their Grammy-winning debut album, Jazz Sébastien Bach in 1963, and ever since the group has been at the forefront of vocal improvisation. The lineup of singers has changed over the years, but they still perform old favorites, and they’ve added new classics as well as fresh originals. “Vocally, the Swingle Singers are in peak form, and the wide range of material on this album displays their mastery of several genres,” says Jazz History Online in a review of the group’s latest album, Weather to Fly.

The original members of the group came together doing background vocals for such singers as Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf. Their first album was a sensation, and the group won four Grammy awards in the 1960s. The current edition of the group, now based in London, features sopranos Sara Brimer and Joanna Goldsmith-Eteson, alto Clare Wheeler, tenors Oliver Griffiths and Christopher Jay, and basses Kevin Fox and Edward Wheeler. Their repertoire spans 500 years of music. Whether they’re reimagining a Bach aria as a chilling murder ballad or conjuring up a meltingly beautiful reinterpretation of a favorite Beatles tune, they continue to explore uncharted vocal territory, delivering folk ballads, funk, and fugues with equal precision and passion.
