Grammy winning country star Suzy Bogguss arrives at the Freight with a brand new album, Lucky, a collection of songs by Merle Haggard. “He really is the poet of the common man,” she says. “Not every artist has music that is as universal as Merle’s. It’s pretty heavy-duty stuff, and I think that’s why to so many of us who sing and write songs, he’s such a king among us.” Suzy is no slouch herself, with 16 albums, including three gold and one platinum, as well as six singles that made the Country Top Ten. Her most recent work has gone beyond contemporary country, including tributes to Stephen Foster, the Eagles, and the Beatles, a glorious swing album, and a collection of American folk classics. Whatever she sings, she sings with an effortless grace that puts full attention on the song. It’s only later that you think, what a voice!

Born in Aledo, Illinois, with a degree in metalsmithing from Illinois State, Suzy moved to Nashville, started singing at Dollywood, and quickly got a record contract. The Academy of Country Music named her the Top New Female Vocalist in 1989. She’s a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion and has appeared on The View, Austin City Limits, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and In Performance at the White House. Tonight she’ll be performing at the Freight, and it should be quite a treat!
