songs from NYC: from Bleecker Street to Broadway

Suzanne Vega, who led the new folk revival in the 1980s with instant classics like “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner,” and Grammy and Tony winner Duncan Sheik, who has been pushing the limits of pop since the late 1990s and co-wrote the music for the Broadway sensation, Spring Awakenings, team up to celebrate their favorite metropolis in a show called “Songs From New York City: From Bleecker Street To Broadway.” These two distinctive artists have teamed up before, collaborating on a musical about the writer Carson McCullers, and tonight they join forces for an evening of song, brilliantly crafted and beautifully performed, showcasing the city they love.

Suzanne grew up in NYC and hit the big time with her self-titled debut album in 1985, which sold in the millions and featured her sparkling acoustic guitar work and unadorned vocal style. Her songs often have a cool sheen, but they pack a powerful emotional wallop. Duncan broke through with a Top Twenty single, “Barely Breathing” from his 1996 debut album. He has experimented with pop music conventions and offered his own highly personal takes on 1980s synth-pop classics in his more recent albums. Both Suzanne and Duncan are story-tellers. Their music explores the mysteries of the human heart with compassion and precision, wit and hard-earned wisdom.
