SupermuleSupermule is a super group of superbly talented musicians who play a bluegrass-inflected mix of catchy originals and great covers from artists as diverse as Bill Withers and Bill Monroe. The San Francisco Chronicle calls them “much more than a great bluegrass outfit” and the California Bluegrass Association (CBA) praises their “tasty blend of fresh, rootsy ingredients. Liberal amounts of jazz, bluegrass, classical, and rock are used in varying proportions.” Their debut album, Northern White Clouds, has a “groovy country sound,” according to the East Bay Express.

Jim Chayka plays banjo. The CBA calls him “the best banjo player you never heard of.” Alisa Rose plays violin. Grammy-nominated for her work with Quartet San Francisco, she also belongs to the Real Vocal String Quartet and has played with 49 Special and Bob Weir. Multi-instrumentalist Rich Armstrong has recorded with Boz Scaggs, Thomas Dolby, Cold Blood, Blues star Johnny Lang, and Michelle Shocked among others. Mike Emerson plays keyboards, and has performed with such musicians as Elvin Bishop, Carlene Carter, Percy Sledge, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Ivan Neville. Bass player Zach Sharpe grew up with bluegrass in Indiana and moved into soul and funk in Sacramento. Yoseff Tucker, who recently appeared at the Freight as part of the Bill Monroe Birthday Tribute, has twice been named the Northern California Bluegrass Society’s Guitarist of the Year and has shared the honor of Male Vocalist of the Year.

With traditional roots and revolutionary zeal, Supermule makes music that keeps on kicking!
