Stephen Saxon & Gospel ShabbatInspired by a Baptist church service full of emotional and spiritual intensity, Stephen Saxon started wondering, "how could you get that kind of spirit into a Jewish service?"

Twenty five years later, Stephen has created Gospel Shabbat, a Friday evening service which he leads, set to new and moving spiritual music featuring a gospel band and soloists. Said Ilene Keys, cantor of the Oakland temple which premiered Gospel Shabbat, "Stephen has exceeded my expectations. The pieces are beautiful and very accessible, which is what gospel is all about."

There are no prayer books. There's nothing you need to read or know ahead of time. Audience participation is not just encouraged, it's irresistible.

Stephen is joined by pillars of the local gospel and indie music scenes, including Devin Watkins, Sundra Manning, Tommy Bradford, Candy Capers, Moorea Dickason, Gerald Colbert, Vernon Bush, Jerry Watts, and the a cappella ensemble Flying Without Instruments.

Stephen is also a jazz singer, trumpet player, klezmer musician and composer. He is the bass singer for the award-winning a cappella jazz quintet Clockwork, and has performed or recorded with Chet Baker, Chanticleer, Bobby McFerrin, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, David Grisman, and Frank Zappa, among others.
