Spider John Koerner has been around for a while. His musical roots in folk and country blues go deep. Bob Dylan writes about him in Chronicles: He “was tall and thin with a look of perpetual amusement on his face. We hit it off right away...When he spoke he was soft spoken, but when he sang he became a field holler shouter. Koerner was an exciting singer, and we began playing a lot together.” John has been exploring the vast range of traditional American song for more than half a century now. His musical style is based in an abiding love for traditional folk songs, a lifetime of studying the music of the old blues masters, and a firm command of his source material.
In 1958, with a borrowed guitar and a Burl Ives songbook, he began a journey that helped shape the course of American country blues and folk. “Alone among the young blues revivalists, Koerner had a sound that was completely idiosyncratic and personal...there was never any doubt about who was playing,” says the website Blueswire. “Today the material has changed but the sound is intact . . . spare and funky, with lots of open spaces between oddly placed notes, all of it held together with his impeccable timing.”
