Söndörgó (pronounced “Shoen-doer-go”) plays music in the Southern Slavic traditions of the Serbs and Croats as found in various settlements in Hungary. It’s thrilling, high-energy music that’s quite different from the more familiar fiddle-led Hungarian folk repertoire. Featuring Áron Eredics, Benjamin Eredics, Dávid Eredics, Salamon Eredics and Attila Buzás, the group formed near Budapest in 1995 and have spent the last two decades researching, arranging, and performing Southern Slav folk music. In contrast to many other Balkan groups, Söndörgó is a tamburitza band. The tambura is a small and agile plucked instrument similar to the mandolin which is occasionally supplemented by wind instruments and accordion. Söndörgó’s traditional repertoire is made up of material gathered by Béla Bartók and Tihamér Vujicsics as well as learned from old masters of the tradition.
