It’s an easy call. If you like electric bass, played solo, by an array of outstanding musicians, this is the show for you! Back at the Freight after a five-year hiatus, Solo Bass Night returns with Michael Manring, Jean Baudin, Ariane Cap, Paul Hanson on bassoon with Ariane, and Dave Grossman.

Michael Manring is a titan of the electric bass, with scores of albums, including seven solo offerings, more than 40 Windham Hill compilations, and collaborations with such artists as the late Michael Hedges, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Montreux, and John Gorka. He’s racked up two gold records, Grammy and Bammie nominations, a Distinguished Alumni award from the Berklee College of Music, and two awards from Bass Player Magazine for Bass Player of the Year. His ground-breaking original compositions, improvisations, and ingenious transcriptions are sure to delight.

The Bay Area’s Jean Baudin, known for his dark, melodic compositions and versatile technique, has performed solo bass shows and taught at clinics across America and in Europe. The website Ultimate Guitar calls his album Solace “a work of great musical and technical prowess” and “an inspiration.”

Ariane Cap of Austria plays bass in many styles, including jazz, folk, flamenco, classical, Celtic, and punk. She’s played with the Mozart Band and the Palm Wine Boys, the Cirque de Soleil and the Sippy Cups. She has recently teamed up with bassoonist Paul Hanson to create the eclectic duo OoN. Paul will be joining her for tonight’s show.

Paul is a world-renowned jazz bassoonist and saxophonist who has worked with such artists as Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Cirque Du Soleil, Davka, St. Joseph’s Ballet, Zenith Patrol, the Klezmorim, the Paul Dresher Ensemble, Jonas Hellborg, Dennis Chambers, Eddie Money (Paul is the sax soloist on “Take Me Home Tonight”), and Boz Scaggs.

Dave Grossman specializes in 7-string electric bass arrangements of the solo violin and solo cello works of J.S. Bach. He has also done some live looping and other original music. Dave used to play with the instrumental rock trio (unpronounceable).
