Slaid CleavesSlaid Cleaves writes great lines. He writes great songs too, but it’s those unforgettable lines that make people wax poetic about Slaid Cleves. “I never knew what time it was till closing time came round,” he sings on one of his classics. “My drinking days are over but I’m still trouble bound.” Stephen King heard that song on the radio, and he liked it so much that he volunteered to write the liner notes for Slaid’s next album, 2009’s Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away. “I’m not particularly good when it comes to talking about music,” Stephen King wrote, “but I know what works for me; what comes across as one hundred per cent authentic. Slaid Cleaves is that thing. He starts in, and something inside the listener speaks up and says, ‘You’re home.’ He can be funny; he can be romantic without being sappy (no mean trick); he can touch your heart.” Why argue with Stephen King? One hundred percent authentic is a fine way to describe Slaid.

He grew up in Maine, lives outside Austin, Texas, and tours much of the year. In 1992, he won the New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Since then, he’s released more than a dozen albums and appeared on several compilations. He spins stories with a novelist’s eye and a poet’s heart. “Men go off to war for a hundred reasons / but they all come home with the same demons,” he sings on the title track of his latest, Still Fighting the War. His chronicles of bruised souls are full of tenderness without being sentimental. If you haven’t heard Slaid before, check him out. You’ll be glad you did.
