Singer-songwriter Robbie Fulks has spent over two decades moving between alternative country, classic honky-tonky, and offbeat roots rock, but he has always maintained his sharp lyrical pen and his eye for dark humor. As encompassed by his recent, ambitious 50-Vc. Doberman project, a collection of 50 songs written over the course of one year, Robbie's repertoire is informed by whip-smart wordplay and an improvisatory, boundary-pushing musical sensibility. His most recent CD, Happy: Robbie Fulks Plays the Music of Michael Jackson gives a strong indication of this artist's surprisingly wide range.

After getting his start in 1987 as vocalist and guitarist for the Grammy-nominated bluegrass band Special Consensus, Robbie went on to form his own rock band, the Trailer Trash Revue, before going solo. He has also taught guitar for years at the famed Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. Known for his fabulous live shows, Robbie and longtime collaborator guitarist Rob Gjersoe are sure to deliver another memorable evening.

In the inimitable words of the New York Times's Peter Applebome, "Fulks is a gifted guitarist, a soulful singer with an expressive honky-tonk tenor, and a natural performer. But what really sets him apart is his songwriting, which is one part artful country, one part artful sendup of country and one part a little of everything else... It's sort of country meets David Lynch."

Country-bluegrass duo Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally open the show.
