Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky ThunderRicky Skaggs has the ultimate bluegrass pedigree. At age six, he took the stage with Bill Monroe and even played Bill’s mandolin. At seven, he played on TV with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. In his teens, he joined Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys and soon branched into country music, playing with The Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe’s New South, and Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band. In 1982, he became the youngest musician ever inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. Since then, he’s won 14 Grammy awards, eight Country Music Association awards, and 12 awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. Why so much acclaim? Of course he has exceptional chops on mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and guitar, writes wonderful songs, and understands what it takes to put together a great band, but more than anything he has a feel for the music. He honors tradition and extends it, expanding the possibilities of both country and bluegrass.

He comes to the Freight fresh from releasing Hearts Like Ours, an album of gorgeous duets with his wife, Sharon White, and publishing an autobiography, Kentucky Traveler: My Life in Music. He’s bringing along his all-star band, Kentucky Thunder, featuring Andy Leftwich on fiddle, Cody Kilby on lead guitar, Paul Brewster on tenor vocals and rhythm guitar, Eddie Faris on baritone vocals and rhythm guitar, Scott Mulvahill on bass and bass vocals, and Russ Carson on banjo. Ricky and his band make bluegrass magic. Get your tickets early, because the show will sell out faster than you can say abra cadabra!
