Richard ThompsonWe’re proud to present Richard Thompson in three solo, acoustic, all request shows at the Freight. His guitar playing is unparalleled – the perfect flurry of notes, the unexpected chord, the ideal run to accentuate a great lyric or convey an unexpected emotion. His songwriting stands with the best. Songs like “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” and “When the Spell Is Broken” are enduring classics – timeless and timely from the moment they were first performed. And his singing is unforgettable, the gravity, the subversive sense of humor, the sense he conveys of a man wrestling with life’s most uncomfortable truths. “This old house is falling down around my ears / I’m drowning in a fountain of my tears.”

Oh, he’s won plenty of awards, including the Order of the British Empire, bestowed at Buckingham Palace by Queen Elizabeth II herself. And why not? He co-founded Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 1960s. If you’ve ever heard his guitar work on “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” you’ve experienced absolute perfection. His decade of musical collaboration with his then-wife Linda Thompson produced such wonders as “Wall of Death” and “Walking on a Wire.” More recently, he collaborated with his son, Teddy Thompson, on the sublime “Persuasion.” Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, and Bob Dylan have recorded his songs. Over the years, he’s recorded more than 40 albums, including his latest, Still.

“I’ve always been a man who’s open to…persuasion,” he sings, and we’re happy to hear it. All three nights will be solo, acoustic, all request performances, so get ready to ask for your favorites and catch Richard Thompson at the Freight.
