An enigmatic singer-songwriter, master guitarist, and a powerful, evocative singer, Richard Shindell keeps his listeners on their toes with his rapid shifts between the bitterly comic and the profoundly spiritual.

Now living in Argentina, the former New York seminary student began composing during the late 1980s, quickly earning a word-of-mouth cult following as a meticulous craftsman of vivid song portraits. His latest CD, Not Far Now, is his first collection of new original songs in five years. Always known as a fine narrative songwriter, Richard's new songs showcase his rare gift for using detail to illuminate his characters' motivations and actions without ever getting mired in moralizing or conclusion. In Richard's own words: "Time deposits me, the character I'm writing about, and a listener there at the first line. Then, at the end of the song, at the end of the last line, life and time go on. The song happens in between those two moments."

Tonight's opener is the eloquent songstress Antje Duvekot, who has won the Kerrville Best New Folk Award and the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Folk Act within the past few years.
