When Rickie Lee Jones sings a song, she discovers its essence and delivers it in her own inimitable style, conveying every nuance, committing herself fully to every note, every feeling. She holds nothing back, diving into the emotional depths and rising to almost impossible heights. A two-time Grammy winner with a pair of appearances on the cover of Rolling Stone, Rickie Lee exploded onto the pop scene in 1978 with hits like “Chuck E’s in Love” and “We Belong Together” and has made a career of fearlessly experimenting with her sound and persona over 15 critically acclaimed albums. “She can sound like a nun who has closed the door in the chapel to sing quietly to herself,” says the New Yorker. “She can sound dissolute, louche, exalted, elegant, or like a figure howling against a menacing sadness. Every word she writes and sings seems earned.”

Tonight she arrives at the Freight with a new album, The Other Side of Desire, which Uncut calls “an arrestingly ambitious musical journey, rich in sonic adventure and detail” and “a record that crowns her career, not as an end but as a culmination.” The title of the album refers to her home in New Orleans, just across the street from where Tennessee Williams lived. She went to New Orleans to write, and the place seeped into her music. “The city is giving to me, or I am scooping from it, musically, culturally,” she said in a recent interview on NPR. She also talked about her spiritual journey. “If you want to keep traveling, you have to work with compassion, love, the single-minded intent to be a joyful or happy or hopeful spirit, and that will guide you to the Big Invisible that takes your hand and shows you, again and again, what cannot be translated into this physical plane.” Somehow, though, she’s found a way to translate the untranslatable into the musical plane, and if you want to hear it, best get tickets quick because they won’t last long!
