Ray ObiedoBrilliant Bay Area jazz guitarist and composer Ray Obiedo celebrates the release of his latest album, There Goes That, with an all-star band and a host of bright new originals full of irresistible grooves and sparkling guitar work. The band features Ray on guitar, Peter Horvath on piano, Marc van Wageningen on bass, Phil Hawkins on drums and steel pans, Colin Douglas on drums and other percussion, Alex Murzyn and Stephen Kuehn on horns, and Nic Beard, Sandy Cressman, and Sandy Griffith on vocals. Their buoyant sound melds straight-ahead jazz with Latin, Brazilian, and blues influences. The result is high-spirited music that grabs you from the first note and holds you in its captivating spell.

Ray grew up in the Bay Area music scene, going to Winterland and the Fillmore to catch Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, Sly Stone and Isaac Hayes, Led Zeppelin and James Brown. It was a heady musical education. He toured the country with Johnny "Hammond" Smith in 1974, toured Europe with Julian Priester in 1977, and toured the world with Herbie Hancock in 1978. Since then, he's toured with the Rodney Franklin Group, Azteca, the Linda Tillery Group, Sheila E, and the Pete Escovedo Orchestra, and he's played on dozens of albums with artists from Holly Near to Grover Washington to Lou Rawls, as well as fronting seven albums of his own. From his Werewolf Recording Studios in the Oakland Hills, he can make the music he most wants to hear. "Time is absolutely one of the most precious and valuable luxuries in the recording industry," he says, "and without question, the greatest advantage of owning my own studio is having all the time I need to make sure each and every track is as close to perfection as possible." Tonight, he and the band celebrate the results of his recording efforts. It should be fun!
