Rita CoolidgeRita Coolidge has been making great music since the 1960s. She started in Memphis, singing with Delaney & Bonnie, then teamed up with Joe Cocker on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, and went on to work with Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, and Stephen Stills, eventually signing with Herb Alpert and recording a string of solo albums, including the multi-platinum Anytime…Anywhere. She won two Grammys while recording with her then-husband Kris Kristofferson, and performed with George Harrison, Roger Waters, Robbie Robertson, and Jimmy Buffett. Her songs were featured in the movies Splash and Octopussy, and in the TV series As The World Turns.

In recent years, inspired by her own Cherokee heritage, Rita has devoted time and energy to advancing Native American music, culture, and causes, forming the group Walela – Cherokee for hummingbird – with her sister Priscilla Coolidge and her niece Laura Satterfield, and performing at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Rita received a Lifetime of Musical Achievement Award at the 2002 First Americans in the Arts ceremony, as well as a Native American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement. “I want to hear music breathe,” she says. The notes that really count – “those are the ones I want to sing.” She sings them with soul and spirit and an easy grace that brings the music to vivid life.
