HYIM is a singer, guitarist, keyboard player, percussionist, songwriter, composer, and activist from Oakland who, in the words of Relix Magazine, “creates a pendulum of styles and feelings, swinging between sunny mento rhythms, spiraling Cuban son, urgent hip-hop manifestos, and pensive balladry – quite a sweeping achievement! HYIM’s music holds a rare gravity and it is clear that he possesses a grand vision.” Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle calls him “spellbinding” and “a formidable talent” and says that “his music smoothly assimilates such disparate sources as Jamaican reggae, Cuban son, Brazilian rhythms, Mediterranean beats, and urban DJ techniques.” Performing live, he lays down mind-blowing loops on percussion instruments and guitar, then moves to his foremost instrument, the piano, and adds the finishing touches. He plays with joy and passion, high energy and tender concern.

HYIM grew up in Oakland. When he was ten years old, his father was shot and killed. HYIM went on to earn a Masters in Psychology, and has worked with troubled youth in foster care, juvenile hall, and other settings. Healing is at the heart of his music. His latest album, Love Songs in Times of War, Vol. 1, includes the single “Sing This for You.”

Partial proceeds from this show’s ticket sales will be donated to Town Park, a skateboard park in West Oakland. Located at de Fremery Park since 2007, "Town Park" has served as a hub for Oakland’s skateboard community. Under the guidance of Keith “K-Dub” Williams, Town Park has become a destination skate-park for local youth of all skill levels, and backgrounds, becoming a local hub where everyone can come together to learn and showcase their skills.
