Ray Wylie HubbardRay Wylie Hubbard is a Texas original. He’s old enough to collect retirement, but he’s still writing songs, recording, performing, producing, touring, and scoring movies, and he still has the same wily spirit that has been his trademark since he wrote “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mothers,” a hit for Jerry Jeff Walker in the early 1970s and an anthem for the Texas music scene. Since those early days, he’s released 16 albums of his own, including his latest, Grifter’s Hymnal, which the website allmusic.com calls “truly inspired. It’s a swaggering, sexy, shake-your-ass, greasy, deep roots record.” And that’s no lie. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer calls the new album “a collection of songs that might not find its way into most churches but sure works as a prayer book for modern times” and praises the “sly wisdom to each that keeps you on your toes. Every so often, lyrics jump out and grab you by the ear, catch your heart and rattle your brain.”

“Words are funky,” Ray says. “The whole idea was, I really like those words, grifter and hymnal. “The grifter kind of came out of the ’20s, kind of like the con man in Paper Moon. I just like the idea of it – not that I’m so much of a con man, but I’m 65 and still scuffling! I didn’t want to peak too soon and I don’t want to be a nostalgia act, so I keep trying to learn new things and make it work. The carrot’s still out there for me.” He just might snatch that carrot tonight at the Freight, and you’ll want to be there when he does!
