Dougie MacLeanDougie MacLean is one of Scotland’s most respected and popular musicians. He has received two prestigious Tartan Clef Awards, a place in the Scottish Music Hall of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and an O.B.E., making him an officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He has recorded more than 25 albums since his debut with the Tannahill Weavers in 1976. His songs have been recorded by Paolo Nutini, Amy MacDonald, Ronan Keating, Mary Black, Frankie Miller, Cara Dillon, and Kathy Mattea, and his song “The Gael” was used as the theme for the movie Last of the Mohicans. His biggest hit, “Caledonia,” has inspired not only a popular Scottish ale but also a single malt Scotch whisky of the same name. What really counts, though, is the music, and Dougie’s music is a lovely, lyrical blend of traditional Scottish folk roots and his own rich experience.

“My grandfather used to sing in the pubs and at home, and when he’d get enough whisky in him he’d sing in Gaelic and the tears would roll down his cheeks,” Dougie said in a recent interview. “I come from a musical Gaelic family, very much so, and I absorbed the patterns and the sense of melody in Gaelic tunes. My mother played the mandolin and my father the fiddle.” Sing Out! Magazine calls Dougie “Scotland’s pre-eminent singer-songwriter and a national musical treasure.” The Performing Songwriter calls him “a Scottish phenomenon,” and praises “his exquisite guitar style, expressive voice and honest performance.” He’s coming all the way from his home base in Butterstone near Dunkeld in the beautiful Tay Valley in Perthshire, Scotland, and he’s bringing the spirit of Scotland with him. (And maybe the spirits, too.) Don’t miss Dougie MacLean at the Freight!
