Nell Robinson’s ever-evolving “The Rose Of No-Man’s Land” tells the story of an American family through original and traditional songs from the Revolutionary War to the present day interwoven with 250 years of letters, stories, and poetry from Nell’s own rural Alabama family. This uniquely crafted concert showcases Nell’s lush vocal quality and artisan story telling. Nell shares the stage with an all-star cast, including two-time Grammy winner and folk icon Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, American roots maven and former punk rocker John Doe, and esteemed author Maxine Hong Kingston.

The band features the best of Bay Area bluegrass, jazz, and country musicians: Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals, Pete Grant on pedal steel and Dobro, Jon Arkin on percussion, and Jim Kerwin on stand-up bass. This evening’s special concert celebrates the album release of The Rose of No-Man’s Land, produced by Joe Henry on Compass Records. Arrive early to check out the new story booth installation created by Nell and photographer/Gulf War veteran Mark Pinto.

This show, which originated at the Freight seven years ago and has gone on to entertain audiences at the Kennedy Center and around the country, keeps evolving, adding new songs and new stories. Even if you saw the sold-out 2013 performance filmed for PBS as part of the Music Gone Public series, it’s worth a return visit!
